Springers Cafe

We found ourselves coming here due to a voucher I received. The setting is fairly charming, but doesn't really all come together. The dining room shouldn't be carpeted; not only would it make cleaning better, but the cottage floor boards would add so much appeal. The tables were laid nicely, but a little cluttered with things that weren't needed. The food we ordered was nice, but not great - very basic food that I can easily do myself, and my wife got fried fish that was cooked in cold oil - not pleasant. The wine list is very lacking too. The grounds are charming and I enjoyed being in their courtyard garden. 19/09/2011

The manager is very friendly and enthusiastic. The serving staff was unsure what to do. The wine list didn't appear because "what we have, isn't on there, and we no longer have what is". When asked for a nice shiraz, the manager appeared with two bottles; we thought, for tasting. She proceeded to fill both small glasses to the brim; half from the old bottle and half from the new. When told how bad it was, she said "Oh, but it's our best seller!". As it was the only shiraz she has, I guess it would be! We didn't discuss the meal, but the rare steak was more like medium-rare, a poor cut, and not tasty. In a picture of efficiency, I was given lots of ground pepper before it even arrived at the table. Very interesting setting in old house, with a number of small rooms and one larger one, with open fires. Set menu for dinner well varied and reasonably priced. Great beef & guinness pie. Wine prices very reasonable. 23/05/2008
