PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAZen Yai restaurant has been part of the Canberra dining scene since 2001. Although its former lunch buffet and function room outpost Zen Yai 2 is no longer in operation around the corner on Northbourne Avenue, the original Zen Yai is most definitely still in full swing. Thai dining in Canberra is generally of a high standard, most likely due to ample competition and diners at least somewhat familiar with Thai cuisine. Zen Yai is no exception. Smaller than some of its major competitors, it offers a more intimate experience without being so small as to feel cramped. Despite its size, an extensive menu offers more choices than one might expect.
The food at Zen Yai generally includes all of the staples – clear and coconut-based soups; red, green and jungle curries; papaya, seafood, beef and duck salads; stir-fries and noodle dishes. Importantly for vegetarians, there are several tofu and vegetable dishes including the ever-popular appetiser of deep-fried bean curd with peanut sauce. Unlike many other Asian restaurants in Civic there is also a decently-sized dessert menu that includes dishes such as green tea ice-cream and black sticky rice with Thai custard. For larger groups, various banquets are available and staff easily cater to dining preferences (for example groups with a high proportion of vegetarian diners). The decor is also tasteful and lively, depending on the weather seating is available outside if desired and the restaurant is mere minutes from the Canberra Theatre and bars.
