The homely but welcoming interior is reflected in the warm lighting, and the crowded atmosphere is offset by traditional music. Sitting off vibrant Garema Place, Three Mothers Thai could hardly be more centrally located with cinemas, theatres and shops right around the corner. With an exhaustive menu, the amount of choice is almost paralysing and the descriptions don’t relate much to the actual finished product. The menu focuses on seafood and offers seasonal delicacies like pia sam rot (deep-fried whole fish with sweet and sour ginger sauce) which is a spectacular dish ideal for sharing. Three Mothers also does a mean pad Thai, with the flavours perfectly balanced – sour and sweet with a touch of heat. There is a large range of vegetarian options and the menu is flexible with special diets and children’s needs. To start, try a Canberra favourite of tord mun (fish cakes) or some tried-and-true satay chicken sticks. For a refreshing meal the hot and sour tom yum goong soup served with prawns is a must. Enjoy some Thai-style king prawns with bamboo shoots or the substantial larb tawhu of spicy fried bean-curd, herbs, chilli and lemon juice.
