Even though there may be no shortage of Asian restaurants in Canberra, when one comes along that offers quality, consistent and authentic food, it stands out from the pack. Soi 8 Thai restaurant in Griffith may not have been on the Canberra scene for as long as some of its neighbours, but in the two odd years that it has been in existence, it has quickly become known amongst locals as a restaurant of choice.

Starting with the tastefully decorated and immaculately maintained premises, vitality is injected into this establishment thanks to the small touches that guarantee a sense of intimacy and care. Fanned napkins that so many of us admired as children will no doubt delight younger patrons, whereas the less youthful amongst us are bound to appreciate the harmonious red, navy and white colour scheme and the ample space left between tables. Indeed, if your experience with Thai restaurants has largely involved plastic furniture and close confines, then Soi 8 may just be your proverbial palate cleanser.

The gastronomic offerings read as a combination of known Thai favourites, and dishes less commonly found. Evident throughout is the sense that these are dishes crafted by chefs who have a thorough and refined understanding of the flavour combinations (and perhaps more importantly, proportions) that underpin traditional Thai cuisine. With a menu that is tempting from top to bottom, there are special dishes that capture attention and whet the appetite. Pad goong prik pao plates up wok-tossed prawns with chilli jam, sweet cherry tomatoes and fragrant basil is a signature of the restaurant and a favourite at every table and.

For Thai cuisine that is close to its roots, well-priced and served in a stylish setting, you cannot go past Soi 8.
