In this informal, traditional Italian restaurant, not only is the pasta authentic, but the chef and waitstaff converse in Italian.
Figaro restaurant is a gorgeously traditional Italian bistro in Kingston. “Another one?” I hear you sigh. Yes, but apparently there are enough customers to go around because this bistro has been around for six years and is still going strong.

Figaro restaurant is a gorgeously traditional Italian bistro in Kingston. “Another one?” I hear you sigh. Yes, but apparently there are enough customers to go around because this bistro has been around for six years and is still going strong. It has been helped along by industry recognition, like when it qualified as a finalist in Restaurant and Catering’s “Informal Italian” category in 2005. But the regular punters don’t follow the awards, they follow their stomachs, and their stomachs seem to lead them back to Figaro again and again.

Perhaps it’s due to head chef Antonino Pagano, who hails from Rome but has worked all over Italy and Europe. Perhaps it’s the authenticity of a restaurant where the waitstaff speak to each other in Italian. Most probably it’s the excellent pasta, pizza, risotto, seafood, meat and weekly specials that pull the crowds; with the added bonus of BYO. It’s not bad value, either, with generous portions all in the $25-$35 price range. The decor is not the snazziest I’ve ever seen, but clearly the focus here is on your plate. All in all – a reliably good, traditional Italian meal that will please the crowds.

Figaro - User Reviews

Ellie)C:

My parents were coming to town and as we hadn't been to Figaro in a while we made a booking with them again. It was very much as I remembered and some of the staff from last time were still there with the same happy demeanour. We were able to get a table outside and enjoyed the warm Spring weather. While the sun was still setting, we tucked into a pizza and some beers that reminded us all of Naples. After a short wait our main courses came out and they each looked amazing and smelt terrific. I thought my chicken was slightly overcooked, but the sauce more than made up for that. And I tried my partner's lamb and it melted in my mouth - delicious! It was great weather to eat outdoors and Figaro makes the most of it. We really enjoyed our night.review 08/11/2011

With a wide ranging menu anyone can find a 'favourite' here. I have about 8 that I often order, but my top pick is their Sicilian style steak. It's done with a mushroom-marsala sauce that is so comforting and makes me happy just smelling it. If I'm in a rush, I just get a pizza to go and I love that they do pizzas that are true to form for what you find in the heart of Italy. Best restaurant in Kingston and best Italian restaurant in ACT - hands down.review 23/09/2011

This place is awesome! I've dined here four or five times now, and every time it has been great. The food is excellent and the value is outstanding. The staff are friendly, the service good, and the atmosphere is lively and full of cheer. Highlights for me are the veal parmigiana, the sautéed chicken, and the tiramisu. This is the best Italian restaurant in Canberra, hands down. I will continue to dine here regularly as long as I can.review 26/08/2011

I read that they just won a great award for the Canberra region, so I wanted to go here myself. It did impress me with kind staff and a menu with something for everyone. I selected the Gamberri and thought it was excellent. The gelato for dessert was the best I've had in years.review 04/08/2011

I came back here with my brother last weekend, when we both wanted to escape the heat and indulge in some gorgeous fresh food. We were glad we came early, as they filled up quickly after we arrived but I don’t think anyone had to wait for service. We started with my favourite – the Maltese pizza and a Peroni. The pizza was so good, we were tempted to cancel our other order and just get another two pizzas. Though in having our meals brought out, we dug into two great meals. I had a steak with mushrooms and my brother had the salmon. We didn’t speak for ages as we just enjoyed the food and fed ourselves with these great flavours. We couldn’t help ourselves, we had an Italian liqueur with coffee to finish and left the restaurant so content and happy. I already know that I’ll be going back and I think that my brother too will be coming again soon.review 01/08/2011

Figaro has a charming underplayed appearance, which is actually true to form for many of the places I went to in central Italy. The staff were really nice to us and under the guidance of the manager, we had a great evening. The manager is really funny and she lifts the mood of the whole place. Our food came out quite quickly and smelt amazing but, more importantly, it tasted amazing too. We stayed for a few rounds of drinks before heading home and the whole group agreed that Figaro made for an awesome night.review 26/07/2011

This charming family restaurant provides a delicious offering of true Italian flavours. I have enjoyed many of the dishes over the years and have found a firm favourite in the veal gatopardo. It is so moorish - I'd have it every day if I could. The tiramisu is made in-house and tastes fantastic. You must leave room for dessert.review 14/07/2011

I was here recently for a special occasion and was so happy with how it all turned out. We had a lovely evening of being treated to so attentively. The caring staff guided us through the menu. We choose some meals that were utilising local produce and weren’t disappointed. My veal with lemon was fantastic and left me wanting to come back again soon!review 17/06/2011

Figaro was a brilliant little find last year. I've been back again and again. Figaro's service is fantasic, with the owner heading the charge in that department. The chef of Figaro is wonderful at preparing delicious tender meat. It tend to order the veal dishes as they are so damn good. My big tip is to book a table the week before.review 12/07/2010

I came here with high hopes having heard friends rave about their authentic Italian approach to cooking. I’ve spent some time in Italy and will now go out of my way to search out proper Italian food now that I’m back in Australia. The lady who served us was a delight and pointed out a few dishes to ensure we enjoyed our night there. I was thrilled with the food. It was so reminiscent of everything I fell in love with on my trip. They even have a gelato that would rival any of the artisans in Rome. The pistachio is world class – it has even been awarded top honours in a national contest. If you have time in Canberra, then Figaro is a true ‘must’.review 07/07/2010

This is simply the best restaurant in Canberra when looking for Italian food. The entrees are tempting, the main meals are glorious & the dessert selection is supremely good. I had a pesto pasta that completely rocked my world. So much flavour in such a simple dish. I'll be going back for another dinner as soon as I can.review 23/06/2010

I had planned on coming here anyway - my sister is a regular when she visits the area. I was confident that I would have a good night, but was still surprised at just how great everything ended up. I had a keen appetite that night and was able to indulge in a small selection of all the tremendous choices on offer. I started with some mussels, then a steak – both of which were amazing. I finished off with a selection of gelatos and I was in love!! The pistachio is one of the best I’ve ever had – ever! The manager is a lovely lady who treated our table so well. I’m hoping to go back there soon.review 23/06/2010

I've been living in Kingston for years and have been so lucky to have found this place a while ago and become a regular. The food is fantastic and reminds me so strongly of my trips around Italy. I heard that the chef is actually Roman, and brings a wealth of experience and inspiration to all his dishes. His talent is in preparing meat. If my waist could handle it, I'd get the steaks and veal every time. They have so much flavour, but still maintain a balance, letting the quality shine through. This great little local business should be on everyone's wish list - just be sure to book. I've been caught out before and had to wait a bit for a table. Well worth the wait by all accounts. A great little small business.review 07/05/2010

Figaro is just a few blocks from my home and I love having such a great place so close. I tend to come here about monthly and always enjoy a night full of good food and great company. The manager is a wonder who has made my times here a pleasure. Try any of the veal dishes if you go here - they are fantastic. Also try to fit in dessert, as the tira misu is great!review 26/11/2009

I had Figaro recommended to me by some mates who know the area & love their food. So with high hopes I came here and was treated to some beautifully cooked italian food that made my mouth water. The pizza that we started with for an entree was awesome with a top quality proscuitto that melted when you ate it. We gobbled it down & waited with inspired apetites for our steaks & chicken dishes. I must say that we loved every bite. The wine that the manager suggested was brilliant and we had a great night with great food. Make sure you book!review 14/11/2009

This place is better than the usual Italian places that I've been to. I've been hear early enough to smell the tomatoes that were cooking down for the sauce and it got my appetite going beautifully. The pasta is indeed wonderful, but the steaks, ..Oh My Gosh! the most tender, flavoursome beef that I've had in over 15 years. I really enjoyed the banter in Italian in the background and the service from the Manager/ partner, is awesome. I've taken many friends here to share how great this place is, and they've all enjoyed the experience. This is now the only Italian place that I bother going to in Kingston as it's the only truelly authentic kitchen there. The others just cater for people wanting massive, but average meals. Figaro has been a firm favourite for four years now.review 03/02/2009
