Profiled by de Groots MediaThis sunny little cafe, occupying its own corner of the Canberra Centre, has long been a favourite with shoppers out for a quick bite or a leisurely lunch. Recently renovated in rich colours of red, gold and brown, Cafe Fontaine plays host to clientele ranging from mums and bubs to business lunchers. And while so many restaurants and cafes in the city boast an “ideal location” – this time, the claims are justified. The area is an elevated section on the second floor, with wall-to-wall windows overlooking the fountain and Canberra Theatre below. Despite being sited within a shopping centre, the place lacks the sterility of most such cafes, giving off a vibe that is both welcoming and tranquil.
Fontaine serves up simple, unfussy cafe-style food with all the usual sandwiches, burgers, salads and crepes. Service is friendly and the wine list, despite being small, has been carefully selected and is extremely affordable. A specialty here is the selection of hot chocolates, which come in classic, dark, mint and white chocolate blends. For the afternoon tea-goer, a tempting display of cakes and other sweet bites grace the bar – including a daily selection of gluten-free choices – as well as a wide range of coffees, teas and juices. Stop by for a pick-me-up while you shop or settle in for a relaxing daytime meal.
