PROFILED BY DE GROOTS MEDIAUnbeknownst to most, there is a fantastic little restaurant in the heart of the National Museum of Australia – Axis. And what better place to dine in Canberra? Situated right at the end of Acton Peninsula, the dining area at Axis feels more like the decks of some lake-bound yacht than a museum restaurant. With views from the western (and quieter) end of the lake, you can relish the sight of Parliament House drenched in the light of the sun setting behind you, or come for a lazy Sunday breakfast and see the yachts racing around from Yarralumla.
Breakfast at Axis is a serious affair; diners will be blown away by the signature breakfast platter. It starts with seasonal fruit, yoghurt and Tasmanian honey, followed by poached eggs on toasted sourdough, grilled bacon, field mushrooms, slow-roasted tomatoes, sauteed potatoes and sausage. Wash it all down with a coffee and some Champagne to end the morning in style! Axis takes lunch seriously too, from the beetroot-cured ocean trout with bacon, potato and herb salad, to pumpkin and asparagus risotto served with fennel. The menu certainly highlights what Australia has to offer the gastronome, and Axis breaks the mould for museum eateries.
