When people think of Canberra’s dining areas, the Woden suburb of Chifley does not usually come to mind. Halfway along Eggleston Crescent are the Chifley Shops, and what you will find there is a pleasant surprise. A Bite to Eat is the type of café that lazy Sunday bedheads make a special effort to rise early for so they can snag a table for breakfast. The café is the antithesis of the snooty, pretentious and rushed eateries that are typical of the Inner South. Instead, A Bite to Eat has a far more alternative and casual vibe.


The food at A Bite to Eat is pivotal in this restaurant’s continuing success. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu is not overly extensive, but focuses on a selection of high quality dishes, rather than quantity of choice. There is always an impressive selection of home-made cakes to tempt those who like to start the day off with something sweet, and a good cup of coffee is guaranteed. The lunch menu includes a range of creative sandwichs, as well as a half-dozen or so hot lunch dishes for those after something more substantial. Dinner features hearty dishes with something to suit everybody, with stews, salads, curries and pasta dishes on the menu. Unlike other restaurants that offer one token vegan dish, A Bite to Eat provides a more generous selection which is often difficult to find in Canberra. Wednesday night is pizza night, which is ideal for a mid-week meal out and every meal can be enjoyed with the selection of wines, and beer on tap that includes the Canberra favourite; Zierholz. Next time you are near Woden, A Bite to Eat is well worth tracking down.
