PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Hidden in an alley on the fringe of the World Square shopping complex, Miso Japanese Restaurant is a refreshing sliver of a dining room dressed in mint-green and white. Naked lightbulbs hang from the ceiling as set meals and bento boxes add splashes of colour to white tables. Opened in early 2008, Miso is part of the Masuya Group, which has sprouted a number of Japanese restaurants across Sydney in recent years. Based on the Japanese concept of teishoku dining, in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, many small dishes form a well-balanced meal at Miso. Most come as a combination of miso soup, main, rice and accompaniments. Ideal for a quick workday lunch or a relaxing evening meal, Miso prides itself on using quality, fresh ingredients.

Asserting it offers the best tonkatsu in Sydney, the Miso kitchen combines premium pork from Otway, Victoria with coarse bread crumbs and Japanese soybean oil to ensure each piece is light and crispy on the outside, and succulent and tender on the inside. For a refreshingly light lunch try the vegetable lover's set meal and a soya milk and honey dew smoothie. At dinner-time, barbecued eel allies with salmon sashimi, teriyaki salmon, tsukune chicken, rice, tofu, eggplant dengaku, egg omelette and fruit to form the colourful unagi bento box. Miso's Wagyu yakiniku set also proves a scrumptious spread, with an array of special sauces and complements available to suit diners' personal tastes. Low prices, takeaway and a BYO dinner policy make this city eatery a popular spot for the shopping and after-work crowd.
