EPOQUE, BELGIAN BEER CAFE
Sydney, NSW

This laid-back Cammeray restaurant in the main street draws the crowds with a hearty menu of European food in winter and an excellent European beer selection in summer. Epoque is known for its mussels which come in nine different sauces ranging from Provencale (tomato, herbs and garlic) to "Siam" (cooked in a Thai red curry sauce). However nobody would hold it against you if you opted for Belgian-style meatballs or sausages or the well-loved schnitzel.

PROFILE BY BEST RESTAURANTS
Whether it's hot or cold, Epoque Belgian Beer Cafe is a trap. Just try to walk past and resist the smell of hearty Belgian food on wintry, rainy days or the exhaustive menu of chilled beer when the summer melts the pavement. It is impossible. And for good reason; without much fuss this comfortable restaurant combines the laid-back atmosphere of a pub with comfortable décor and a drool-worthy menu. In decor Epoque is simple – wooden tables, chairs, floors and skirtings lit by wrought iron chandeliers and complemented by vintage beer adverts that hint at the beer menu.

Here you will not be disappointed, although making a selection is not easy. Draught beer features Hoegarden, a couple of Leffes and the curious "Kriek". Made with fresh cherries and lambic, this burgundy-coloured beer has a unique taste that you'll either love or hate…but is well worth a try. Then again you might be more inclined to get your hands around the unique wooden bracket that holds an hourglass-shaped vessel of "Kwak" – its 200-year history is reflected in the taste. Or you might like to commandeer the tropical-flavoured "Piraat" – a beer that was drunk by seamen because of its high nutritional value. Just don't wear yourself out deciding on the drinks because the food menu offers just as many options. The food comes flying out of the kitchen at incredible speed, the staff are always on hand with a smile and when you leave, you know that the next time you walk past, you'll walk in.
