Event Description:
With a ring ding ding of the farm bell, bustling trade begins at Tasmanian Farm Gate. Wade through a spirited medley of prime Tasmanian produce covering all manner of animal, vegetable and mineral. The application process to score a stall at this gourmet gathering is very thorough. Each farmer and producer is visited on site at work to ensure that their product is authentic, and it also gives the market organisers the chance to gain some insight into local growing methods. Seasonal produce and artisan products take centre stage at this gala performance of Tasmania’s tastiest and most creative foodstuffs. The market is like a candy store for carnivores, with hard-to-find cuts like free range Berkshire pork, farmed rabbit, goat, smoked chicken and quail. Heritage varieties of fresh fruit and vegetables are likely to inspire even the most reluctant home chef to cook up a spring feast. Gorgeous artisan products include jams, relishes, chutneys, pickles, soap and many more unexpected epicurean concoctions.

The markets are held every Sunday at Melville Street outdoor car park. Although they run from 9am – 1pm, it’s never too early to slurp up a delicious seasonal soup and sip a not so old-fashioned bottle of lime chilli boutique beer. After the kids have sampled a fig and honey brownie and a cup of lemon and raspberry cordial, there’s plenty of space to let off any excess sugar-fuelled energy. The market’s most popular visitors are the baby animals that drop by every so often to entertain the children and some soft-hearted mums and dads as well. Dogs are welcome and buskers provide atmosphere and entertainment as you browse the stalls.
