Event Description: Whether you love or only mildly tolerate the unmistakable sound of bagpipes, you have to agree that there is something very country-rustic about them. Their distorted melody summons winds to blow across vast fields, and wide blue skies to shine over grazing cattle. If ever there was a sound for village life, bagpipes would surely earn that honour. So it is perhaps for this reason that each year the Glenlyon Food and Wine Fayre, which focuses on the village atmosphere, is summoned to life by the rousing tunes of Scottish pipers.
Following the haunting melody, 35 wine and food stalls – including restaurants, producers and wineries – file among the streets of the Victorian town. A handful of musicians rove between the exhibitions amusing and entertaining visitors and, like at many good fairs, the best chefs in the area come out of the woodwork to host cooking demonstrations. Local cooking talents also show off their recipes and closely-guarded family cooking secrets. And with cheeses, preserves, biscuits, olive oils, puddings, the latest vintages from local winemakers, mulled wine, chocolates and country hospitality a-plenty, this year’s fair will no doubt draw a few food and wine enthusiasts into the visiting crowd. The first stalls of the Glenlyon Food and Wine Fayre will welcome visitors at 10am, and bid them farewell at 4pm. Entry costs $12.50 per person and includes a souvenir wine glass.
