Surfers pay homage to the ocean through wax and boards, divers use masks and air tanks, at Ocean Room you feel completely immersed in the ocean yet remain dry throughout the experience. The whimsical light fittings transport you to the depths of the ocean; the soft fabric and glowing lights replicate the most beautiful underwater garden. Generous fish tanks line the wall above the entrance, crowned with a tropical fish tank, blending the commercial with the aesthetic. The sights and sounds of the working harbour seep through the expansive glass walls.
The aquarium offers the delights of the sea: there’s shellfish, from pipis to green lip abalone, crustaceans, from lobsters through the crab family, and the swimming under-water dwellers include barramundi and coral trout. They are for sale by weight and are listed with suggested cooking methods including aburiyaki charcoal grilled, oven roasted with Szechuan pepper, or wok fried with garlic and chilli. The “small eats” menu offers pint-sized wonders such as Wagyu beef tataki cornet or golden crab dim sum, while the “starters” menu continues the delicate Asian-infused theme with “shots and spoons” of fresh sashimi, or Tasmanian black label oysters with granny smith apple mojo. Seafood also features alongside a few meatier mains, including river-stone table grilled aged black Angus beef.
