Curtain to rise on the iconic property of Dame Nellie Melba - New Yarra Valley wine and food destination

91/09/2013 - The family of Dame Nellie Melba and owners of Coombe Farm Wines are thrilled to embark on a major development at their Coldstream property, which will give visitors an experience ‘behind the hedge’ and celebrate the life and times of one of Australia’s most famous women.

Known to many Australians as the face on the $100 note, Dame Nellie Melba was born in Melbourne in 1861 and was the first Australian to gain international recognition as an opera star. After achieving international acclaim in 1909 she bought a property at Coldstream, Coombe Cottage, which was built in 1912 and was her home until she died in 1931. Coombe Cottage has remained in her family and retains much of her objet d’art and impeccable sense of style.

The facility, to be known as Coombe – The Melba Estate, will offer a stunning and unique location for weddings, opera and exclusive private functions. The courtyard design will provide a market square style atmosphere for visitors to enjoy a gourmet wine, food, retail and artistic experience at the home of one of Australia’s cultural icons. It is hoped the facility will accept its first visitors in December 2013.
