A Michelin star for Aussie Skye Gyngell

23/05/2011 - Australian chef Skye Gyngell joins the ranks of the dining world elite after winning a Michelin star for her Petersham Nurseries Café in Surrey.

The “less is more” philosophy behind her greenhouse café has not only charmed the likes of celebs Madonna and Mick Jagger but foodies around the world too. “We serve as simple food as possible and try not to interfere with the flavours too much. To be rewarded for all our hard work is absolutely amazing,” says Gyngell of winning the shiny Michelin star.

The café first opened in 2004 with just one table that seated 10 patrons. Today, the restaurant now serves 120 per sitting. (Bear in mind that word “café” is somewhat misleading since starters cost around $18 and mains $41).
While many would think that with a Michelin Star under her belt, two children and several acclaimed cookbooks to her name, Gyngell might consider lightening the work load but she is doing quite the opposite with plans to open Petersham’s first outpost, at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park next year.
