When in Rome… you must try this restaurant.

Date Posted: 04-02-2008

This is another topic suggested by our readers. You have asked for the must-try restaurants from around Australia and around the world. It may be a famous Michelin-starred restaurant in New York or Paris. It could equally be a brilliant hide-away noodle and dumpling house in an unremarkable backstreet somewhere forgettable. Perhaps it’s something unusual or bizarre, such as the old Dark Side of Hyde Park restaurant in Sydney that had patrons dine in the dark (luckily the waiters had torches built into their hats). Or maybe it’s an underground guerilla dining event and you don’t know where or when the next one will be. Whatever it is, wherever it is, we want to hear about your must-try-before-you-die restaurant so we can start ticking items off our culinary “bucket list”.

The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant in Melbourne is definitely a 'different experience'. As suggested by the name, diners travel on a vintage tram round Melbourne city and usually out to St Kilda & back. Two dinner sittings - 'early' round 90 min (3 courses) or 'late' 5 course trip. As a Sydneysider I have done the trip several times over the years. Food is very good, esp. when considering the limited space available for the chef/cook. They have a website.

Generally speaking, my policy is not to eat on anything that moves - trains, revolving restaurants, paddlesteamers and especially aeroplanes. I haven't tried the Melbourne tram experience for this reason, so it's interesting to hear that the food is acceptable. Another possible exception to the rule is Alto on top of Black Mountain in Canberra. The food is - well, not spectacular, but professional - and the view is stunning. JOC

If you're in London and gagging for a decent coffee, there's a little place called Flat White (Aussie run, obviously) in Berwick St, Soho that won't look at you sideways if you ask for a double mac or piccolo.
